A court reporter takes the word-for-word record at examinations for discovery, questioning, arbitrations and some court proceedings, then produces the transcript the parties rely on afterwards. Certification is voluntary in most of Canada rather than a licence, so a reporter's credential comes from a professional association rather than from a regulator.
